Red Bull Soapbox race 2019

We just got back from the 129th edition of Red Bull Soapbox race.
It has been held for the third time in Croatia, and the interesting thing is that the slope of the race ends directly on the main Zagreb square.

There was total of 55 teams racing for the first place. The one that eventually got the most points and took the first place was the Jamaica Bob Team.

The track itself was 350m long and it started from a 5m high platform that gave them that first rush of acceleration. Unfortunately, due to geography of the track, most of the racers just lost its start inertia and just stopped on the first third of the track which required pushing from their team members. I am mentioning this because there were few really serious teams that have tested their vehicles going 60kmh, and were preparing for the extreme conditions, but ended going like three times slower. Also, because of the mild slope, there were not so many silly failures and crashes that we used to see on Soapbox videos. However, that didn’t stop anybody from having fun watching or competing.

The whole event lasted a good couple of hours, together with bicycle and motorcycle stunts during breaks, and provided a nice amount of fun for everybody.

The only thing left to see are the photos.

One of the most serious competitors was this guy in Varaždinski klipič.

Team Klipani have tested their vehicle on speeds exceeding 55+ kmh prior the race.

For me, this Lancia Delta HF Integrale replica was the best looking vehicle there. They managed to get some nice acceleration at the end, and make this rally -looking jump, not to mention drift braking with a hand brake at the end.

Motorcycle stunts in between the races.

Not many people can say they were doing burnouts while riding backwards on a motorcycle in a main square in the city of Zagreb.

The whole race could be followed on a few large displays.

One of the most memorable runs was the Zagreb fire department. That have run the whole course in a burning house. The fire was quite intense and you could feel the heatwave when then hurled next to you.

This thing was one of the faster racers.

This was a tam from guys that work at Rimac Automobili.

On the first glance, it looks wacky like the rest of the vehicles, but then you see the suspension, welds and the disc brakes, and you know that this guys are the first-class fabricators first, and then everything else.

These guys have probably stronger chassis than my Capri 😀

While looking at the crashes on the Soapbox races, I’m amazed that full face helmets are not a common thing.

This guys had a long travel independent six wheel suspension which really worked great.

Red Bull Soapbox 2019

As usual there was no lack of imagination with the design.
