Love in Limbo (1993)
While picking a movie I always try to give the unknown ones with trashy covers a chance. Especially the ones with the picture of a famous actor that I am able to recognise only after the third try. So I found a movie with a plot happening in the 50s and on the cover – the gladiator himself (Russel Crowe), who plays a nerdy teenager.
We are all familiar with American Graffiti and Grease but Love In Limbo… I have never heard of.
So we start to watch the movie, a typical comedy about horny teenagers – one who has just been expelled from high school for selling his own drawings of naked women to his school friends, one is our gladiator who is a bit confused and motivated employee in a company that the expelled one comes to work at, and the guy who comes to work there as well, as help.
Besides scenes of seducing babes at drive-in cinemas, dancing jive, driving in old, used wrecks of cars and attempts of visiting a brothel, there is a parallel story about a local charmer and his adventures… of course, I have to mention that this movie also contains boobies.
However, the whole movie seemed a bit off to us from the very start… the humor wasn’t too clear (humoristic scenes were more uncomfortable than funny), accents were weird, there are Italians and Mexicans, a huge multicultural chaos… And then the scene that revealed the whole story – f…ing kangaroo jumps on the screen and hops all over a yard, and no one makes a big deal out of it. IMDB explains that it’s a Australian movie with a American Pie-ish story, and that it wasn’t much of a success.
All in all, it’s a good recommendation to anyone who likes movies from that era, and wants a bit of something exotic (kangaroo for example).
