PROJECT: Theatrical prop
YEAR: 2010
CLIENT: Srećko Borse | Exit Theatre

The installation consists of electro – pneumatic device which activates three injections.
It was used as a stage prop in a play Faustus’ Module Re-Linked at Exit Theatre in Zagreb and simulates an execution of an actor.

Over the years I have build a bunch of weird and strange projects, this isn’t the weirdest, but it has its place in that list. I was commissioned to build an execution syringe prop, but had no idea how the thing looks, and in conversation with the director it was described how it needs to look for the play.  Three huge syringes and some system to push them, it needed to rust easily and have a medical feel. Also, it was meant be easily operated, but in the same time to be really sturdy device.

This was the first time I decided to use a CNC punching machine instead of usual CNC milling machine and it worked like a charm.

Every little piece was designed in advance, CNC punched and just blotted together.

From my school experience and especially after making robots for fighting I was confident that industrial pneumatic components can deliver everything I wanted for this project.

The frame was made out of bare unprotected steel, so it can rust to become “Rusty Widow” in all its glory.

There was some amount of circuitry involved into the build.

At the edge of the installation was installed pneumatic quick release connector, so the system can be pressurized via bike pump.

Everything nicely packed to make a medical looking device.

At that time, I was into paintball over my head, so I used some components and combined them with the system. This is originally CO2 paintball bottle that was now in function of storing a couple atmospheres of air.

I bought the biggest syringes I could get my hands on, so they can be seen by the audience during the play.

Couple of pilot switches and standard mini bulbs for detail.

For the refiling syringes, I installed a finger operated nut.

Nothing to see at the back side. Except the nuts and the bolts.

Flow regulators have been also used, so the speed of the pistons can be nicely tuned.
